Four candles. Classic comedy from the two Ronnies...

Sometimes, even native speakers find it difficult to understand native speakers...

Have a listen to the sketch by 'The two Ronnies'. Can you guess the things Ronnie Barker is asking for?

Scroll down for a little clarification after you have had a go.

Here is a little help fo you if there was anything you missed.

'Four candles'...  'Fork handles'... In this case garden forks.

'Plugs' (rubber plugs) suggesting the plug for the bath that stops the water draining.  'Electrical plugs'. 13 amp is the measuremnent of size.

'Sore tips'... The British love of the double entendre.... The two ronnies are leaders in the use of this saying one thing that sounds perfectly natural while the audience often immediately thinks of an alternative 'naughty' meaning... You can make your own descision about the tip or tips that are sore.

Actually Ronnie was asking for protective covers for his 'saw'.(notice the spelling)
'o's       (Garden) 'Hoes'.We make this assumption because of the fork handles mentioned previously.
Ronnie corbitt then tries 'Hose' assuming the letter 'h' is being dropped (unspoken) which is common with some English dialects.
Then he tries 'Panty hose' (stockings) in his desperation... before being told 'o's, (the letter).

Translation of "mon repos" in English.
Noun. my rest. my repose. my resting-place. my slumber.
Je dormirai et je prendrai mon repos. I will lie down and take my rest.

'p's  We all  make the same assumption before... 'tins of (processed) peas'

'pumps' 'foot pumps'Ronnie is starting to get the idea but... he means 'pumps' which  are like deck shoes...

'washers' Ronnie Corbitt is gettiing angry now and runs through a list of different 'washers'

Finally snatching the list (That's rude  to snatch folks)

The final one 'billhooks' are hedging tools for the  farm... But (And here comes the double entendre again) we all think 'bollocks' which is a slang term for male testicles.....
The second sales person who is not andgy immediately understands...
'billhook'...

In the after clip comments we have Ronnie Barker explaing how he didn't like the ending and changed it from 'billhooks'/'bollocks' to (door) 'knockers'  with 'knockers' being a slang term for ladies breasts, which as you can hear by the audience reaction, always gets a laugh.

You can always rely on the internet but I'll let you find your own images...

What does “knockers” mean?
The slang phrase "knockers" refers to a woman's breasts. It is a colloquial term used to describe or refer to the size, shape, or prominence of a woman's chest area.

Example.
I can't believe he made a comment about her knockers. That's just rude.
